The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump has stripped Harvard University of the right to educate foreign students, according to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, as reported by the national portal “Adyrna” citing the BBC.
U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem issued an order to revoke Harvard University’s certification to run student exchange programs. Foreign nationals planning to study in the U.S. must obtain an F or M category visa. Such visas can only be issued by institutions certified under the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) to host foreign students and exchange participants.
This means that Harvard University can no longer accept international students. Those currently studying at Harvard will have to transfer to another institution or risk losing their legal status in the country.
According to the university, approximately 7,000 international students were enrolled at Harvard last academic year, making up 27.2% of the total student body.
“The administration holds Harvard responsible for promoting violence, antisemitism, and ties with the Chinese Communist Party,” said Kristi Noem.
She also stated that “admitting foreign students is a privilege, not a right” for universities, and emphasized that “they profit from the high tuition fees paid by these students.”
