Today marks the birthday of Shot-Aman Ualikhanov, a renowned architect, the creator of the National Emblem and the Independence Monument in Almaty, as well as a scholar and public figure, reports an “Adyrna” correspondent.

Shot-Aman (Shota) Ydyrysuly was born on April 26, 1932, in the village of Sarymbet, Ayyrtau district, in the Kokshetau region. He was a descendant of the famous Ablai Khan.
After graduating from the Moscow Institute of Architecture in 1956, he worked as an architect at the “Kazgorstroyproekt” design institute, then as a junior researcher at the Kazakh branch of the USSR Academy of Construction and Architecture, deputy chief architect of Almaty city, first deputy chairman of the Republican Society for the Protection of Cultural and Historical Monuments, and chief architect at “Kazgrazhdanselproekt.” From 1973 to 1982, he served as chairman of the Union of Architects of Kazakhstan and as secretary of the Board of the Union of Architects of the USSR. From 1990 to 1995, he headed the Department of Art and Architecture at the M. Auezov Institute of Literature and Art.
In 1999, he became an academician of the Academy of Social Sciences, and in 2001, an academician and professor of the International Academy of Architecture of Eastern Countries.
Shot-Aman Ualikhanov is the author of numerous buildings, monuments, and over twenty memorials in Kazakhstan. These include the “Universam” store in Almaty, the building of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Kazakhstan, the “Kazgiprozem” building, as well as monuments to Chokan Valikhanov, Tokash Bokin, Abai, Ghani Muratbayev, Alibi Zhangeldin, Akhmet Baitursynov, Kenesary Kassymov, and many others.
