Vasily Vasilyevich Makiyenko, a native of the North Kazakhstan Region and a veteran of the Great Patriotic War, has passed away at the age of 99, reports the national portal “Adyrna.”
The news was shared by the akim (governor) of the North Kazakhstan Region, Gauyez Nurmukhametov, on his social media page.
The veteran went to the front lines before he even turned 18. He fought as part of the Guards Rifle Regiments and was awarded the Order of the Patriotic War, 2nd Class, along with several medals for his bravery.
After the war, Makiyenko worked in the water management sector and served as deputy head of the production department for 13 years.
According to the regional akim, the veteran led an active and healthy lifestyle and had a strong zest for life. In 2024, he participated in the ceremony of laying flowers at the Eternal Flame. He would have turned 100 in 2026.
