Today, on May 23, Harvard University filed a lawsuit in federal court in Boston against the actions of former U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration, according to “Adyrna.”
The university argues that the U.S. government’s decision to strip it of the right to admit international students violates the Constitution, specifically the First Amendment.
In the lawsuit, Harvard emphasized that the decision would have direct and devastating consequences for the university and more than 7,000 international student visa holders.
“With a single stroke, the government attempted to eliminate one-quarter of Harvard’s student body—international students who make vital contributions to the university and its mission,” the complaint states.
Previously, Harvard described the move as an “unconstitutional act of retaliation” by the Trump administration, carried out in response to the university’s opposition to political demands from the White House.
The university has stressed the significant role international students play in education, scientific research, and shaping Harvard’s global reputation. This case has reignited a major public debate in the U.S. over immigration policy and the independence of higher education.
