The Cannes Film Festival, held in France, was organized for the 78th time this year. Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi won the prestigious Palme d’Or, Adyrna reports.
His film A Simple Incident tells the story of a dissident recently released from prison.
Panahi shot the film secretly and without official permission in Iran, as he was banned from making films and leaving the country. The director was released from prison in 2023. After being unable to leave Iran for 22 years, he has now won the festival’s top prize.
The second-highest honor, the Grand Prix, was awarded to Joachim Trier for his film Sentimental Value.
The international film festival takes place annually in Cannes, France. This year, 22 films competed in the main competition.
