Russian Presidential Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov stated that Moscow still recognizes Armenia as a member of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), Adyrna reports.
According to him, participation in the CSTO is a sovereign decision by Yerevan, but no official announcement has been made about Armenia withdrawing from the organization.
“Our position is that Armenia has not left the organization. As for suspending or resuming participation, we will rely on the decisions made by Yerevan,” Peskov said in response to a statement by Armenia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Vahan Kostanyan.
Earlier, Kostanyan announced that Armenia would soon make a final decision regarding its CSTO membership.
Peskov emphasized that the CSTO brings “clear benefits” to Armenia and has proven its effectiveness multiple times. He added that such cooperation aligns with the interests of the member states.
To recall, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan announced in February 2024 that the country had temporarily suspended its CSTO membership. In May, Armenia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that Yerevan would cease financial contributions to the organization. Armenian authorities explained the move by citing the CSTO’s lack of adequate response during the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
