NATO should abandon the agreements and establish permanent military bases on the Russian border, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda said in an interview with The Times newspaper. "Adyrna" national portal informed about this.

The Lithuanian leader also said that the West "should not give in to the blackmail of Vladimir Putin, who promoted nuclear weapons." He urged allies to be prepared for increased military costs if "very dangerous and urgent action" is needed.

At the same time, the politician explained why Putin "falsely" opposes nuclear weapons.

According to him, allies in many Western countries understand that Putin is a "gambler". "He is afraid of all dangers and takes such a step not because he is strong, but because he feels weak. I think that the last uprising in Russia has clearly shown his weakness to the whole world. Therefore, we must be strong, and our strength can be the strongest barrier." said the politician.

Let's remind that the act on relations and cooperation between NATO and Moscow was signed in 1997. The document provides for not deploying new members of the alliance near the border, not to permanently deploy nuclear weapons and significant combat forces close to the bottom of the border.
