Maryam Alsaed Tiyrab, a 20-year-old Sudanese woman, was sentenced to death by stoning for adultery. According to The Guardian, this is the first verdict issued in the next 10 years, the national portal "Adirna" reported.

The woman is going to appeal to the court. According to the publication, convictions for stoning women are usually overturned in the High Court.

A spokesperson for the African Center for Justice and Peace Studies (ACJPS) in Uganda said the sentence violated domestic and international law and called for the woman's immediate release.

The representative of the center said that the woman was not given a fair trial and was not told that the information she gave during the interrogation would be used against her. According to them, Tiyrab refused legal representation.

In 2020, Sudan's interim government, which replaced Omar Al-Bashir, announced reforms to some of its harsher criminal laws and Sharia policies. The reforms did not include a stoning sentence, but in August the country ratified the UN Convention against Torture. An ACJPS spokesperson said stoning is a form of state-sanctioned torture and violates the country's human rights obligations.

Human rights activist Jeanne Henri said the verdict shows that harsh Sharia and penal laws still apply in Sudan.

Earlier, a similar incident happened in 2013 in the state of South Kordofan. But the verdict was overturned.
